Cite knowledge in chat
Ground an agent's answer in your knowledge base — read its citations and pin a specific page.
This guide grounds a chat answer in your knowledge base. It assumes a running instance with at least one knowledge page and an agent that can search knowledge — normal chat can. It uses the chat workspace in the web UI.
Ask, and read the citations
Open a chat and ask a question your knowledge base can answer:
What is our refund policy for orders older than 30 days?
The agent searches knowledge, answers from what it finds, and marks each claim it drew
from a page with an inline citation — [1], [2], and so on. Each marker links to the
source page, so you can open the exact page a statement came from.
If an answer has no citations, the agent did not draw on a stored page — either nothing matched, or it answered from the chat alone. Pin a page (below) to force it to use one.
Pin a specific page
To make the agent answer from one page in particular, type ~ in the composer. A
search-powered menu appears; pick the page you want. It is pinned into that turn, and the
agent answers from its full content rather than from whatever search happens to return.
Pin more than one page by repeating ~ for each.
Governance pages load on their own
Some pages are flagged to always load. Those are injected into every agent's turn as governance — operating rules and policies the agent sees without searching and without your pinning them. You do not need to cite or pin a governance page for the agent to follow it. See Governance knowledge for how the injection budget works.
